The Future Is Here: Holograms

Holograms are no more a scientific fantasy, but more a scientific reality. Soon you may be able to interact with colleagues around the world as though they were right in front of you. Video conferencing may be the current answer to globalization; however, things would change with holographic devices. Families too would stand to benefit from holographic devices, especially when parents need to be out-of-town.

Holographic devices may take a while to enter the market. However, they are bound to become popular amongst consumers looking for solutions through technology. Holographic devises such as holo-projectors could be installed in offices and homes, which may soon become as popular as mobile technology. Many would love the idea of working from home and not having to commute to work since they could have an office environment within their home. The benefits of holograms could far outweigh the disadvantages, which could lead to an invasion of holographic technology in our homes. Possibly, holograms could interact with the environment.

The possibilities are endless. Of course, there will be loads of research requiring time and money to bring more than an audio visual experience to people. Technology is forever changing, which will no doubt bring about better hologram capabilities. We could see holograms having a significant impact on our workplace. Offices could be brought home, and vice versa, taking telecommuting to another level. This technology has already got many entrepreneurs designing some great applications for this new science. We may be looking at a 500 million to 1.5 Billion Dollars market in a span of two years, which would just be the beginning. Modern day holographic imaging has already seen several major breakthroughs in its technology, with the entertainment industry leading the way. Spectral Imaging has been perfected by IBM and is used as a business marketing tool. Soon it will be used to display holographic looking virtual images, or people. Welcome to the future.

The Smoking Ban

Why implement such weak policy concerning smoking? I won’t deny it, I have loved the fact that people are no longer allowed to smoke inside public buildings, it has made going to the pub, bar or a nightclub much better and stops me waking up the next day with that horrible stale smokey smell in my hair and on my clothes.

Why don’t the government just do what anyone with any sense would do and ban smoking altogether. We don’t allow people to take cocaine in their own houses so its not as if banning smoking would be the only thing one isn’t allowed to do in private. The simple fact is that the government is too scared to ban smoking.

Imagine the outcry that would result from such a policy. Sure, for a few months to a year there would be some backlash, but after a while of no smoking, which is to the benefit of the general public, people would realise that it is the right thing to have been done. People are just damaging their bodies, it’s almost like self-harm.

The amount of money collected in taxes placed on tobacco purchase must be huge and that has to be the reason why the government has not, and probably will never implement a smoking ban. Everything that is done in politics, from basic policy to laws revolves around money, which is quite sickening when you think about it. The issue over smoking is no different.

They took the biggest step that they could before they would start to lose a lot of money by implementing the public ban that they did. Why support an advertisement campaign asking the public to stop smoking for the benefit of their health, but then continue to allow companies and shops to sell tobacco? It is hypocrisy at its worst.

Surely banning it altogether would achieve what the government is trying to achieve in those ad campaigns? They have the power to do such a thing and yet they are relying on people to stop on their own. The addiction to smoking is so high that people rarely can stop on their own, even if they want to. Its like asking a cocaine addict to stop, but then making cocaine readily available to him all the time. Its time for the government to man up concerning the smoking ban.

I was a complete insomniac last night and decided to go searching round the internet for something to keep me occupied, turns out the House Forum is not only a brilliant way to waste time but also fairly entertaining!

The Strange World Of ‘Salad Fingers’.

Anyone with a taste for the surreal will just love this. It’s a rather strange animation by David Firth called, ‘Salad Fingers’. It’s all a little bit difficult to explain, but I shall do my very best…

Salad Fingers, a green and lanky figure, lives in a strange and barren-looking world. The only other characters to dwell here are odd and often scary creatures that wander around the landscape now and then. They do not appear to have any specific purpose to their lives; but in ‘Salad Fingers’, nothing appears to have any specific purpose.

There is no great story to follow in this animation; each episode simply follows our character’s interaction with some random object. I just watched one about a nettle (in a pram) and found the whole thing a bit freaky…

The background music in the cartoon is a rather unsettling track by Boards of Canada called, ‘Beware the Friendly Stranger’ and other musicians lend their work to this cartoon from time to time as well. Brian Eno, Aphex Twin and Sigur Ros have all been credited in the animation.

A friend of mine is a really big Sigur Ros fan and I shall have to send her an email…

If you could transfer David Lynch from film to cartoon then you would probably end up with ‘Salad Fingers’. It is eerie, amusing, disturbing and addictive to watch. The animation has gained a very large cult following over the last six years. You can now even buy ‘Salad Fingers’ T-shirts, stickers and button badges!

So, I was speaking to my brother who works in the city and he reckons that there is massive money in buying stocks for heating oil supplier. He is one of those types of people who is of the belief that America is trying to seize the world by taking over the Middle East. I must say I am getting bored of the fact that everyone seems to have the same reasoning on this.
