A Spoonful of Additives Makes the Medicine Go Down!

As a mother of 2 children under 6, I must confess to being under-awed by the news of additives in child medicine – it’s usually pink and smells/tastes remotely like some form of fruit – they needed to conduct a research project to determine there was something not quite “natural” about these products?  Well way to go researchers, you’ve proved what most mothers could have told you without the expense!

The thing is that we have to chose between two evils – do we give our child one or two teaspoons of something that contains a tiny bit of something which may or may not create a bit of diarrhoea, or do we allow their temperature to soar because they spit out medicine that tastes awful?  Let’s see – high possibility of fever risking convulsions…..minuscule possibility of side effects – hmm tough choice…not!   Most of the time we’re talking about 2-6 teaspoons over 24 hours once or twice a YEAR for goodness sake!

It’s bad enough that the medicines have been altered so that at a time when our kids need sleep to help their bodies get rid of whatever infection they’ve got, you can’t get a child medicine over the counter that helps them sleep!  Take away the additives that help the medicine go down, and we’re going to be having to go to the doctors with sick children who could easily have been treated at home with over the counter medicine.  I recognise that some parents do have legitimate concerns because they have children who are allergic to some additives, but the majority of parents are not in the position so why not make an additive free medication for those who really need it, and leave the rest of us with a medication that works just fine thank you very much!  If you must meddle with something that’s full of additives, take a shot at the sweetie counter instead of the medicine one!

Ow, a little news on the work front.
